the art-union kicks shit off
the american art-union, initially established as the apollo gallery in 1838, was reorganized in 1839 as the apollo association with the goal of providing exhibition space and financial support for american artists during a period of economic depression. seeking to cultivate a wider appreciation for art in the united states and modeled after similar organizations in europe, it was later incorporated and renamed the american art-union in 1844.

the art-union gets fucked
facing mounting criticism for its lottery system and accusations of financial mismanagement, the american art-union ultimately faced legal action in 1852, leading to a court ruling that deemed the organization an illegal lottery. consequently, the american art-union was forced to liquidate its assets, including its extensive art collection, and cease operations.
